Women is Jailed After Nurse Finds Maggots In Baby’s Diaper

Anderson County, South Carolina – Michelle Shontel Butler, a 20-year-old Honea Path woman was jailed Sunday after a nurse found maggots in her 10-month-old child’s diaper.

According to Honea Path Police, Butler was at a friend’s apartment when witnesses told her that her baby appeared to have a fever and was pulling at his ears.
Witnesses told her that she needed to call a doctor because the child needed medical attention, but after their advice was ignored, the witness called 911 themselves. The baby was taken to AnMed Health Center, accompanied by an officer.

When a nurse removed the child’s diaper, several maggots fell out of it. The child also tested positive for marijuana. The child was treated for an ear infection, then released to the custody of the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

Officers searched Butler’s apartment and found the residence cluttered with trash and debris.

Butler was booked into the Anderson County Detention Center and charged with unlawful neglect of a child. She was released Monday after posting $10,000.
